Welcome from the Head of School
It is my pleasure to welcome each of our families to the new academic year.
Pinewood American International School is an independent, non-profit, day and boarding PK-12 school offering an internationally enriched American college preparatory curriculum and International Baccalaureate Diploma Program to students from the international and local communities. At Pinewood, students engage in a student-centered program that challenges them to develop our core values of curious, creative and caring thinkers.
In our Early Years Program, Elementary School and Secondary School, our curriculum is designed around four essential components: (1) engaging with content knowledge, (2) developing skills and competencies, (3) building character and (4) cultivating a growth mindset. This approach, in contrast to an archaic system of top-down delivery of information by teachers, is vastly more effective in preparing young people to be contributing members of tomorrow’s society. We know that humankind is facing exponential growth in so many areas of our lives; thus, prompting us to continuously ask ourselves, as educators, how to best prepare Pinewood students for a world of unprecedented transformations and uncertainties.
To frame the work that we do in setting our students up for success, consider the following scenario. The students in our Early Years Program this year will be thirty-something in 2050 and will be elderly persons at the turn of the next century – the 22nd century! What should we teach these children that will help them flourish in the world of 2050 or even the 22nd century? Our answer is that children are flooded with enormous amounts of information today, so what they need is to make sense of information by learning how to discern between true and untrue, valuable and unimportant, ethical and corrupt and to be able to combine that information to create new knowledge and solve problems.
Part of creating the best possible conditions for our students is providing modern and flexible learning facilities. To that end, I am honored to announce the commencement of the design process for a new Pinewood Secondary School building this year, with the Elementary School to follow upon its completion. The exciting move to our new campus, a dynamic shared campus with Anatolia College, will further enhance the delivery of our mission and vision.
The faculty, staff and I look forward to working collaboratively with each of our families to inspire our students in learning and growing together this year as Pinewood aims towards all students becoming inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective.
On behalf of the faculty and staff, I wish each of our families and students a year of wisdom, strength and humor.
Your support is deeply appreciated.
