About the Program
This August, Pinewood opens its doors to all students entering Grades 1-5 and Grades 6-8 for a stimulating and active summer English preparatory program guaranteed to build their confidence with the English language, improving valuable language skills while settling back into the school environment.
What and how will students learn?
The curriculum is based on Pinewood’s extensive experience in teaching children whose first language is not English. As such, students engage in daily activities designed to introduce, develop and improve their comfort level with the English language. Areas of focus include: speaking, listening, conversation through active hands-on learning activities that utilize all areas of the school’s campus, including the library, gymnasium, art studio, music/dance studio, computer lab, kitchen, outdoor space and more. The program is designed to provide a 2-week active, real-world language immersion experience that complements the learning that students experience during the regular school year.

Our Elementary Ease into English summer program features experiential learning experiences as a means to develop English language skills. If your child is just beginning their journey into the world of English language learning or if they have already begun developing their language skills, it is an ideal time for them to continue their explorations in a fun environment that piques their curiosity.
Pinewood’s summer program combines several different elements to allow for a dynamic learning experience which will develop vocabulary, comprehension and oral language, help build independence and improve overall English language skills. The students will benefit from daily experiential enrichment activities aimed to immerse these young language learners in real-life connections and experiences.
Secondary students attending Pinewood’s Ease into English summer program will engage in hands-on acquisition of the English language through literary and scientific texts in various formats (text-based and digital) to extend and hone their reading, speaking and listening comprehension skills, their digital literacy and information seeking skills as well as critical thinking and creativity. Students will work independently and in small groups on fun assignments such as role plays that boost their confidence in using English to communicate and share information. Students will be deeply involved in the language through daily learning, team building and cultural activities using teaching resources from acclaimed international museums. Instruction is interactive and multi-sensory, teaching both total word construction and phonics.
Expected benefits include the smooth transition into the demands of the new school year so that students are able to speak English throughout the day through formal or informal activities to better support their academic achievement in all subjects. The grammatical elements of focus will be: simple tenses (present, past and future), continuous tenses (present, past and future), passive voice and reported speech. The lexical interests are thematic vocabulary units (e.g. digital citizenship, technology and space, environmental studies, biodiversity and types of pollution, food around the world and shopping). Students will also be introduced into academic writing principles in order to prepare them for written assignments with proper formality and clarity. The resources include textbooks, online materials such as e-libraries and interactive games.
